How to use the calendar to drive marketing and public relations

Special days on the calendar may not be top of mind when considering marketing your product or business, but calendars offer wealth of promotional opportunities.

These opportunities are yours for the taking. They are plentiful, and in many cases, you can capitalize them at no cost.

What are special calendar days?

You’ve got your calendar out. Now, what should you be looking for? There are a few different kinds of “holidays” to note.

National holidays: Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas. Each of these holidays attracts attention…and offers you opportunity for you to capitalize on that attention.

Special observances: Two examples:June 6 (1944) is remembered for the Allied landing on Normandy in the Second World War. July 20 is remembered as the day man first landed on the moon (1969).

Invented special calendar days: There is some kind of special observance, event or made-up celebration every single day of the year. They range from the important (e.g. awareness months, heritage months) to the silly (June 1 is National Nail Polish Day). If you want to take a closer look (and get a few chuckles), there are a number of websites out there for you.

Personally important dates:  When is your client’s birthday? When is the anniversary of when you and your client began doing business? What are the significant events in your client’s history? Each of these kinds of personalized special days offer an opportunity you can use to keep your business in front of those who are most important to you.

Want a vivid example of a special day: America’s 250th birthday!

America’s celebration of our independence comes around every year, but 2026 offers a special kind of July 4 celebration because it lands on one of those numbers that connote longevity and success.

Marketers are already by taking advantage of the celebration of America’s 250th, and you can, as well.

Whether it’s simply adding a patriotic touch to your website or something tangible, e.g. delivering red, white and blue decorated cupcakes adorned with a tiny American flag to your clients with an appropriate message, the 250th is a special calendar day that Americans can all feel good about.

America’s 250th is a vivid example of how marketers are capitalizing upon an important day in our history to connect with Americans.

Look at the calendar to identify special ways for you to reach out

As you map out your marketing plan, you can schedule “special days” public relations well in advance.

From a strategic standpoint, you will create a new and different way reach out and touch both current—and potential—clients.

From tactical standpoint, you will have created a sure-fire way to own the attention of clients and potential clients, even if it’s only for a moment. How you tactically achieve this will depend solely on your creativity and ingenuity.
