World Famous Weeki Wachee Mermaids Set to Return to Ripley’s Aquarium in July

Finned beauties to prove that mermaids are more than just figments of fantasy and imagination as they perform 12 shows, July 23-25

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (July 7, 2010) – Following 12 commanding performances at Ripley’s Aquarium last summer, the world famous mermaids of Florida’s Weeki Wachee Springs State Park, known for their grace and beauty for the past 63 years, will be returning to Myrtle Beach once again later this month.

You’ll see mermaids as you have never seen them before – live and in front of you!

The finned beauties will grace the aquarium’s waters for 12 shows, July 23-25, 2010. Free with admission to the aquarium, it was standing-room only for last summer’s critically acclaimed performances. “Reservations for the shows are not offered. My advice is to arrive early in order to secure the best view.” noted Peter MacIntyre, the aquarium’s GM.

The mermaids will perform each day at 12, 2, 4 and 6 p.m. and will be available to meet and greet guests following each show in the shallows of Friendship Flats. The stage at Ripley’s Aquarium will be Ray Bay, a 15 foot deep, 85,000 gallon saltwater tank, populated with sharks and stingrays.

Special photo opportunities and several interactive programs will be offered in conjunction with the mermaid’s visit, including a “Mermaid Splash,” where guests can join a mermaid in the water and splash, pet and frolic with the friendly stingrays. Availability for these interactive programs is limited and reservations are required. For further information about the interactive mermaid programs contact Mary Clark at 843-916-0888, extension 3226.

This year, the popular and enchanting mermaids Daniella Demonaco, Shannon Tooker and Ashley Beadleson will be traveling to Myrtle Beach from their home waters at Weeki Wachee to swim among the sharks and rays.

“We are absolutely delighted the girls are coming back,” said MacIntyre. “For the past two summers, their shows have been very well received by our guests. Watching their underwater ballet is truly a joy. It’s something you can’t see just anywhere.”

A Brief History of the Weeki Wachee Mermaids

Weeki Wachee Springs State Park, also called The City of Live Mermaids is truly an original piece of Florida’s rich heritage and one of the state’s earliest roadside attractions.

The Weeki Wachee Springs underwater theater opened on Oct. 13, 1947. The mermaids performed synchronized ballet moves 20 feet underwater while breathing through special air hoses hidden in the scenery.

In the 1950s, Weeki Wachee, located north of Tampa on Florida’s west coast, was one of the nation’s most popular tourist stops. The attraction received worldwide acclaim and several movies were filmed at the spring.

Weeki Wachee’s heyday began in 1959, when the spring was purchased by the American Broadcasting Co. (ABC) and was heavily promoted. The ABC creative team developed themes for the underwater shows, with elaborate props, lifts, music, and story lines.

In the 1960s, the glamorous mermaids performed eight shows a day to sold out crowds – as many as half a million people a year came to see them. The mermaids were treated like royalty wherever they appeared in Florida and stars of those days, including Elvis, Don Knotts, Esther Williams, and Arthur Godfrey, stopped by to see them perform live.

Today, tiny Weeki Wachee is one of the nation’s smallest cities, with a population of nine, including its mayor, Robyn Anderson, a former mermaid. It is also a Florida State Park. www.weekiwachee.com

GATLINBURG, Tenn. (March 26, 2010) – Following standing-room only performances at Ripley’s Aquarium of the Smokies last summer, the world famous mermaids of Weeki Wachee Springs State Park in Florida, known for their grace and beauty for the past 63 years, will be returning to Gatlinburg once again this summer.

You’ll see mermaids as you have never seen them before – live and in front of you!

Due to the popularity of the performances last summer, three extra shows have been added to accommodate the mermaid-loving crowds. The finned beauties will grace the aquarium’s waters for 12 shows, August 6, 7 & 8. They are totally mesmerized.”

The mermaids will perform each day at 12, 2, 4 and 6 p.m. and will be available to meet and greet guests following each show in the shallows of Friendship Flats. The watery stage at Ripley’s Aquarium of the Smokies will be Ray Bay, a 15 foot deep, 85,000 gallon saltwater tank, populated with sharks and stingrays.

“Lizardman” Captured by Ripley’s Believe It or Not!

Ripley’s is creating life-size figures of a man who has transformed himself into a reptile

ORLANDO, Fla. (Aug. 27, 2010) – The headline sounds as if it’s been ripped from the Weekly World News: “Caught on video: Ripley’s Believe It or Not! creates wax figure of half-man, half-lizard!”

But this is a true story.

The F/X experts at Ripley’s Believe It or Not! are creating wax figures of Erik Sprague – aka “Lizardman.”

Sprague is a performance artist who has turned himself into a reptile. He has a forked tongue, pointy teeth and is covered in scales, thanks to several hundred hours of tattooing. He says his body-based performance art has been to explore what it means to be human and differentiate himself from other humans.

The Ripley’s F/X team is taking body casts of Sprague this week, the first step in creating Lizardman life-size figures for several Ripley’s Believe It or Not! museums.

To view downloadable images and videos of the casting process, as well as Sprague talking with Edward Meyer, Ripley’s VP of Exhibits & Archives, about why he has turned himself into a human lizard, go to http://www.ripleysnewsroom.com/lizardman-wax/

Ripley’s Believe It or Not! Acquires Lady Gaga Portrait Made from 61,509 BB’s

One-of-a-kind BB face will hang in
Ripley’s Hollywood Odditorium

ORLANDO, Fla. (Aug. 2, 2010) – Her poker face may be tough to read, but there will be no mistaking the face on a new Lady Gaga portrait acquired by Ripley’s Believe It or Not!

The portrait is a mosaic made from 61,509 Airsoft BB’s – the plastic balls used in a popular type of BB gun.

The artwork was created by Gainesville, Florida artist John O’Hearn, who is primarily a sculptor, but has spent the last few years experimenting with Airsoft BB’s as a medium. The BB’s act as pixels in the mosaics he creates. O’Hearn says he can recreate any picture or portrait from just 5 colors of BB’s – red, yellow, blue, black and white. This project took about a month to finish.

The Lady Gaga mosaic is 4 feet high and is 8 feet wide.  It contains:

  • 303 plastic tubes
  • Each tube contains 203 BB’s
  • 61,509 BB’s in all

“This is a spectacular work of art,” said Edward Meyer, VP of Exhibits and Archives for Ripley’s Believe It or Not! “O’Hearn uses computer technology and an unusual medium to put a modern-day spin on pointillism.”

Unique Celebrity Portraits at Ripley’s

Lady Gaga joins an exclusive list of unique celebrity portraits that hang in Ripley’s Believe it or Not! Odditoriums worldwide, including President Obama, Michael Jackson and Dean Cain all made from gumballs, Eminem and Elvis made from M&M’s, Princess Diana made from dryer lint, Beyonce, Marilyn Monroe and Mo’Nique made from licorice and gummy bears, Taylor Swift made from pink and white Good N’ Plenty candies and the Beatles made from chicken wire.  Another John O’Hearn creation hangs in Ripley’s St. Augustine, Florida Odditorium – a portrait of football quarterback Tim Tebow made from 46,000 BB’s.

The Lady Gaga portrait will go on display in Ripley’s Hollywood Odditorium in Spring 2011 following an extensive museum renovation and remodel over the winter months.

To view downloadable high-resolution images of the Lady Gaga portrait, go to Ripley’s Newsroom.
